Topic: Kashiprasad Ghose
Born an Aug 5, 1809 in a rich zaminder family of Paital-Habra, Kashiprasad amazed all from the day of his admission (8.10-1821) to the 7th class (class V of present standard) of the Hindu college by his proficiency in English language. By 1829 he distinguished himself not only for his academic brilliance but also for his remarkable acumen for writing excellent verses in English. His English poems ‘Shair & other poems’ (1830) and ‘The Boatman’s Song to Ganga’ attracted attention of the poetry-lovers in no time, after they come out in print. At the age of 22, on the request of Prof, Wilson of Hindu college, he wrote an essay, published under the title-‘Criticism of Mill’s British India’, in the Government-Gazette of Feb 14, 1828. This was a bold and patriotic attempt in his superb style of prose writing which established the unmatched intellectual brilliance of educated Bengalees—groomed under the academic environment of the Hindu college.
Frequent contributor in ‘Literary Gazette’, ‘Sambad Pravakar’, ‘Vigyan Sebadhi’ (a Bengali Seience journal) he also wrote quite a few Bengali songs of
Tappa-Style.
In the social sector, he served as a member of Bethune-School Management Board (1856). Hony, Presidency Magistrate and Justice of Peace (J.P) of Calcutta and a Jury in the first batch, introduced in the Supreme Court of
Calcutta (1834). Besides being the distinguished founder-editor of the ‘Hindu Intelligencer’ from 1846 to 1857-Kashiprasad, well known for his multi-faced qualities, died on November-11, 1873.
